Healing with Ayurveda
Long before the advent of modern medicine in Europe and Europian colonies, highly skilled physicians had been relying on Ayurveda to successfully treat patients for thousands of years in South Asia. Originally native to India, Ayurveda is a holistic system of natural medicine that seeks to bring about equilibrium and good health in body, mind and spirit.
Gentle yet powerful, Ayurveda teaches us to know ourselves and work with what we’ve got to achieve our own dynamic equilibrium of optimal health. Through simple lifestyle choices along with various treatments, Ayurveda shows us how to live a harmonious life in good health and sound mind.
Central to Ayurveda is the concept of the doshas. These are subtle forces that act as organizing principles in the body-mind-spirit, each tending to throw the others off balance so that in the balance between all three good health can be found. They reflect the different combinations of the five Great Elements that can be found existing in living systems. The doshas are named Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and they arise from the foundational energies of Prana, Tejas and Oujas respectivally.
Within the doshas can be found combinations of the Great Elements that exist within living beings. These are:
Vata – Air (Vayu) & Ether/Space (Akasha)
Pitta – Fire (Agni) & Water (Jal)
Kapha – Water (Jal) & Earth (Prithvi)
Achieving a state of balance between the doshas and elements while remaining true to one's unique constitution is, according to Ayurveda, the key to good health and longevity.
